Do you have an extra bedroom, bedroom and bath, or a combination bedroom, bath, and sitting room? Is the nanny’s space, separate from your home, perhaps in a carriage house or on another level of your home separate from the family’s space? Is there a separate entrance? A caregiver should have at a minimum, a room with a window(s), a closet, a place for a dresser, a night table, and a chair. It is not a hallway or a pantry off a kitchen. Believe it or not, there are still people out there that think a bed in a corner of an unfinished or partially finished basement or in a pantry off the kitchen is OK. It is not if you want to have a “warm. Loving, responsible, reliable person” looking after your children.
I have had nannies tell me about some of the conditions they had to live-in and it is not pretty.
Lately, many more nannies have been specifying that they would like private quarters. This can be anything from a bedroom with a separate bath on the same floor as your family’s bedrooms to a living area somewhere else in the house. There are nannies who will choose among jobs based solely on where their bedroom is and its size. So, you should be aware that accommodations are becoming one of the key determining factors for nannies in selecting jobs.
One very experienced nanny had specifically requested a room and a bathroom separate from the family. She specifically said that she did not want to be on the same floor as the parents and children’s bedrooms. However, don’t despair. There still are nannies who will be very happy to have a nice room anywhere in your house.
